The Marchés Publiques de Montréal (MPM) are a vital part of the city. There are some 15 markets all around the city, each open all year round with different products depending on the season. They are known for their “village-like” atmosphere and their interest in eco-friendly products and sustainability. They strive to support local farmers and sell the freshest produce they can.
The concept behind this baba ghanoush packaging is that the vegetables found at the market are naturally imperfect but still perfectly good to the taste. To represent the perfectly imperfect vegetables, a texture was made to show that those imperfections can be beautiful and should be appreciated. With the market’s values in mind the paper is completely biodegradable and the glass jars reusable.
The approach for this brochure was to highlight this notion of the unknown or ghost building. To do this, a special ink is applied through screen printing and hides each place where the station is mentioned as well as the photographs where it is located. This ink, which dries white, becomes transparent when wet and reveals what is hidden underneath, the forgotten building. The use of water is a reminder of the primary function of the pump. The architectural features of the building thoroughly inspired the shape and grid used for the leaflet.

The Craig Pumping Station, although not well known, is a historically significant building for the city of Montreal. Since its construction in 1888, the city of Montreal has not experienced spring floods. Having become obsolete in 1954 with the arrival of the Seaway, it was forgotten and then faced threats of demolition from the city. On the verge of collapse, its dismantling took place in 2020 in order to be rebuilt under better conditions.
